Man Ray
Man Ray was an American painter, photographer and surrealist. He was a leading figure american figure in the Dada and Surrealist movements, as well as being influenced by cubism and futurism. Man Ray is particularly well known for his black and white photographs, as well as his photographic experimentation. His camera-less 'Rayograph' series, where he placed objects on photo sensitive paper and exposed it to light; these Rayographs feautured dream-like imagery (typical of the Dada movement). He also developed the solarisation process with photographer Lee Miller, which he used for much of his portraiture and fashion photography.

Man Ray explored a wide range of subject matter throughout his work. His paintings feautured a range of differed surrealist compositions as well as some more abstracted and cubist pieces. Many of Man Ray's Rayographs focused on compositions of different objects, some more recognisable than others, to create many abstracted compositions. His portraits (many were created using the solarisation technique) were often close-ups of the subjects, often focusing in on certain feautures.
